Procedure for portrait commissions

1. Initial discussion and agreement form
The process begins with an informal, introductory discussion (either in person or on the
phone/via e-mail, depending on the client's preferences) that covers any initial ideas/thoughts for
the project. It’s a good opportunity to spend a little time with the sitter or commissioning client, as sometimes a few minutes can be invaluable in getting precious insight of the sitter's character.
In this discussion, we set all terms (preferences on live sittings/picture references, pricing,
deadlines, framing, delivery etc.). When these details are set, I will send an agreement contract
outlining all the discussed terms. The agreement contract is to be signed by both the artist and the client.

2. Deposit payment

Once the agreement form is signed, a deposit payment of 35% of the final price is to be made
as a firm commitment.

3. Reference images/ live sittings
Over the next few days, we develop a rough idea of direction for the sittings or reference
images, as previously set in the initial discussion.
In case the client prefers to send images for me to work from (sometimes live sittings might
not suit the client's schedule), we choose together from a selection of already available reference
pictures.
If working from life, this is when dates for sitting sessions are set. In the case of live sittings, I
try to keep them to a minimum. Normally this would involve one afternoon session, where I would
visit the client (I have found sitters to be much more relaxed in their own environment) and where I can make quick sketches, while discussing with the client and if needed, take pictures for further
reference. The purpose is to get as much reference data as possible, in a discreet manner that does not affect the client's schedule.

4. Painting begins, timescale
When there is sufficient reference material, I create a few composition ideas for consideration
(either sketches or digital simulations). We would then refine the composition via email until there
was a definitive agreed reference for me to work from.
Once a composition is approved, the painting process would begin. Depending on workloads
and complexity of a portrait, its completion can take between 1-3 months. However, consideration
will always be given should there be any specific deadlines involved.

5. Painting approval, final payment and delivery
When the painting is completed, you will receive a picture of the final painting to approve.
After the client’s approval of the final image, the remaining payment (65% of the total price) is to
be made. Once the final payment is successful, the painting is then delivered at no extra cost in
London. Outside London and internationally, the price is to be set once the dimensions of the
painting are set in the beginning, as that will determine its weight as well.
